The gender pay gap in the U.S. has narrowed from women earning 65% of what men made in 1982 to 85% in 2024.
For younger workers aged 25 to 34, the wage gap is even narrower, with women now making 95% of what men make.
The wage gap persists due to women being overrepresented in lower-paying occupations and factors such as educational attainment, occupational segregation, and work experience.
Employers have an opportunity to narrow the gender wage gap by equipping women workers with the skills needed to advance their careers.
