How to clean a laptop keyboard without damaging the keys

  • After a few months of use, keyboards of laptops gather oils, dust, food crumbs, and drink drips, which should be cleaned periodically.
  • Cleaning precautions should be exercised before starting with the process, like backing up important data, turning off and unplugging the laptop.
  • For removing accumulated dust, it is recommended to use a vacuum cleaner with small brush attachments, instead of compressed air.
  • To clean the stubborn grime that builds up due to oils, skin cells, and food dust, use a melamine sponge soaked in water, and try to avoid rubbing off any key characters.
  • For germ-killing, use some isopropyl alcohol and clean each key thoroughly with damp cotton swabs.
  • In case of spills, shut down and unplug the laptop, take out the battery, and let any liquid inside evaporate before turning it back on.
  • To clean up the surface of the keyboard and for deeper residue cleaning, the laptop keyboard might have to be removed completely, or some keys can be pry off.
  • Cleaning should be done periodically to keep the laptop in good condition and avoid unresponsiveness while using it.
  • Instead of self-cleaning, it's recommended to consult professionals for cleaning the laptop's keyboard.
