How to Fix File Explorer NTDLL.dll crashing in Windows

  • Windows File Explorer is crashing showing an ‘NTDLL.DLL’ error message. The NTDLL.DLL message accompanies the File Explorer crash, preventing users from using the File Explorer.
  • To fix errors with File Explorer NTDLL.dll, Windows users can restart their PC, restart the Windows Explorer, update graphics drivers, reinstall the display adapters, run the system maintenance troubleshooter, clear the File Explorer history, perform a clean boot, run the SFC command, and update their Windows Operating System.
  • Restart your Windows PC by clicking the Windows Start button and then the Power options. Under Power Options, select ‘Restart.’
  • Restart your Windows Explorer from the Task Manager app if restarting your PC doesn’t help.
  • Update your graphics driver by opening the Device Manager, expanding the Display Adapters tree, right-clicking on the graphic adapter, and selecting Update driver.
  • Reinstall your display adapter's program by opening the Device Manager, expanding the Display Adapters tree, right-clicking on your current display adapter, and selecting Properties. On the Properties, select Uninstall device. Restart your PC to reinstall the display driver again.
  • Run the System Maintenance Troubleshooter by clicking on Windows Search and typing in System Maintenance. Then, select Perform recommended maintenance automatically from the list of apps that appears.
  • Clear your file explorer options by clicking on the Windows Search and typing in File Explorer Options. Open the File Explorer options from the list of matching results.
  • Perform a clean boot by clicking on Windows Search and typing in msconfig. Open the System Configuration app and switch to the Services tab. Check the Hide all Microsoft services and Disable All button.
  • Run the SFC command by clicking on Windows search and typing in Command Prompt. Right-click on the Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. When the Command Prompt opens, execute the given command: sfc/scannow.
