HP is planning to implement a feature inspired by CarFax reports to collect and store data on the use and health of PCs at a firmware level.
The feature will securely store life-cycle records on the SSD of the PC, allowing future owners to view the history of the device before purchasing it.
This system will not only track data collected within the PC but also include information such as supply records, diagnostic logs, customer support records, and data from third-party repairs.
While targeted towards business-class PCs, this initiative aims to reduce e-waste by encouraging repairs for specific faults or outdated parts instead of replacing the entire system, although its effectiveness in consumer tech turnover remains uncertain.
