I tested the Core Ultra 9 285K against the Ryzen 7 7800X3D — and it’s ugly
- Intel’s new Core Ultra 9 285K underwent a comparison test with AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Performance claims from Intel don’t seem accurate when compared with AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which is the best processor for gaming.
- The Core Ultra 9 285K is a 24-core CPU, which doesn’t come with simultaneous multi-threading, and each core has only a single thread. Intel combines its Lion Cove P-core design with the Skymont E-core design.
- The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is an 8-core CPU with a total of 16 threads, boosting up to 5GHz with 104MB of cache. The Core Ultra 9 285K lacks any fancy 3D V-Cache but has its own tricks.
- The Core Ultra 9 285K requires higher power than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The former draws twice (or more) as much power as the latter, but usually with much better performance. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is much cheaper at $450.
- Overall, the Core Ultra 9 285K is faster in some applications than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but performance doesn’t apply everywhere; Ryzen 7 7800X3D provides a transformative uplift in gaming performance and is much more efficient in consuming less power.
- In-game, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D crushes in all 10 games tested and provides a transformative uplift in gaming performance. On the other hand, the Core Ultra 9 285K can only hope to match the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
- The Ryzen 7 7800X3D stays efficient under heavy workloads, even while delivering higher performance in comparison to the Core Ultra 9 285K and is much cooler while playing games. If you’re a gamer, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the way to go.
- In terms of productivity performance, if that’s what you care about, the Core Ultra 9 285K is the way to go. However, the review flags inconsistent productivity performance with Intel’s latest CPU.
- While AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D is cheaper and better for gaming, Intel’s Core i9-14900K or AMD’s latest Ryzen 9 9950X might be worth investing in if looking for good productivity performance and gaming in equal strides.
- The Ryzen 7 9900X3D is expected to come with next-gen 3D V-Cache CPU in the coming month with an expectation for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D to drop to $350-400
