Iberdrola is planning a 1.32 GW pumped-hydro storage project called Proyecto de Aprovechamiento Hidroeléctrico de Minhéu in Portugal, which would be the country's largest facility of its kind.
The project aims to increase energy efficiency and storage capacity for Iberdrola's Alto Tâmega hydroelectric complex by constructing a reservoir in the Cumeada area, hydraulically linked to the Alto Tâmega dam.
The planned reservoir will not utilize water from additional basins and will operate using licensed water resources for the Alto Tâmega reservoir. It is designed to generate between 2,500 GWh and 3,000 GWh of annual output.
The project is currently in the environmental impact assessment process and will be open for public consultation until July 3. Iberdrola aims to enhance energy production capacity through this new pumped-hydro storage facility in Portugal.
