AMD is reportedly sitting out of the high-end gaming race this generation, and it’s bad news for Nvidia fans. The graphics processing unit (GPU) market is at risk of slipping into unhealthy territory. This is due to the rivalry between AMD and Nvidia cooling down.Nvidia is slowly chipping away at AMD’s market share, currently holding 88% of the GPU market.AMD has no plans for a high-end RDNA 4 graphics card, leaving Nvidia to monopolize the high-end graphics card market. If Nvidia charges $2,000–$2,500 for the RTX 5090, there’ll be less of an incentive to keep prices reasonable. This could result in crazy pricing across the entire stack and affect those who want to buy an RTX 5080.AMD has done it before and it can do it again, but the GPU market needs more than just Nvidia to thrive. To stay healthy, the market needs more competition and pressure from AMD could’ve helped. We’ll likely find out more during CES 2025 in January.
