In 1928, Eric the Robot debuted in London and promised the robo-butler of the future.Eric was designed in Gomshall, UK and 'spoke' with a pre-recorded human voice.Čapek's play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) inspired Eric's acronym 'RUR' on his breastplate.Eric's abilities were limited and he didn't create the fear of automation that surrounded robots.Nearly a century after Eric, we haven't mastered humanoid robots.Human biases and fears may reveal in future models of robots.Companion-like robots may reflect a brighter future between man and machine.Our current robots exist as giant mechanical arms to surgical fingers to friendly service bots.Robots have not yet mastered humanoid robots and taken many forms.In 2016, Eric was refurbished for a 2017 robotics show at the Science Museum in London.
