Jaume Collet-Serra returns to his signature mid-budget action thriller genre with Netflix’s Carry-On. The film stars Taron Egerton as a TSA agent who embarks on an airport-wide manhunt to find and stop a dangerous bag from reaching the plane after finding a mysterious earpiece in one of the security bins. In a conversation with Digital Trends, Collet-Serra talked about Carry-On’s status as a Christmas movie and his return to mid-budget thriller. He also discussed how he set out to make a more grounded action movie with minimal use of action sequences, and the role of ensemble cast and procedural elements in keeping the audience invested.
Collet-Serra is famous for making several high-concept mid-budget action thrillers including Unknown and Non-Stop to Run All Night and The Commuter with Liam Neeson. Carry-On is Collet-Serra's return to the genre after directing two big-budget blockbusters.
The idea of making a thriller movie for a new generation with contemporary themes such as relationship, job, aspirations, and future gave a fresh look to the thriller genre in Carry-On.
Jason Bateman played the role of a villainous character in the film. Collet-Serra picked Bateman because he is super intelligent and can easily switch between comedy and drama roles.
Collet-Serra tried to keep the action sequences minimal and realistic, unlike his earlier works. He wanted the characters to look vulnerable and get hurt when they engage in fights.
The ticking clock and procedural elements are important to keep the audience invested throughout the film. Collet-Serra wanted to provide every detail of the TSA operation to the audience without making it look like a scientific explanation.
Collet-Serra explained that despite the importance of early development and planning, Carry-On was on his radar for some time, and he always intended to make a film like this.
Collet-Serra also discussed the role of Christmas in Carry-On, saying that it helped in defining the characters' attitudes, wardrobe, and music. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
