MAST, a Danish maritime architecture studio, is proposing a radical transformation of Rotterdam's Spoorweghaven neighborhood with a floating community featuring over 100 apartments, public green space, moorings, commercial units, and a new harbor for leisure.
The floating housing development in Spoorweghaven is designed to address the spatial pressures faced by cities in the Netherlands, offering a flexible model for growth without the ecological cost of dredging or land reclamation.
The project aims to blend into Rotterdam's existing fabric by introducing cycling routes and blue corridors of transport, creating links between land and water, while incorporating communal gardens and shared spaces to encourage social interactions.
MAST's plans for Spoorweghaven include supporting aquatic life with floating reedbeds, contributing to the city's ecological network. The construction will utilize prefabricated structures built off-site to reduce construction impact and allow for adaptability in the future.
