India-Bangladesh garment trade hit: How the last truck came in through Petrapole minutes before restrictions kicked in

  • Approximately 30% of land-based trade between India and Bangladesh is accounted for by Petrapole, the largest land port in South Asia.
  • Import items affected by the restrictions include briefcases, jute yarns, hydrogen peroxide, bags, cotton rags, etc. Re-routing shipments through sea ports like Kolkata and Mumbai is being considered, but it would lead to cost escalation for importers.
