India has imposed restrictions on imports from Bangladesh effective immediately, where the import of certain goods will now be regulated through specific ports.
The new regulations cover various categories of goods, with specific ports designated for their entry, such as Nhava Sheva and Kolkata for ready-made garments and land custom stations and integrated check posts in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and West Bengal for fruits, processed food items, cotton products, plastic goods, and wooden furniture.
Exceptions to these restrictions include imports of fish, LPG, edible oil, and crushed stone from Bangladesh, and Bangladeshi exports transiting through India to Nepal or Bhutan are not affected.
This move is aligned with India's Foreign Trade Policy 2023 and aims to streamline import processes, ensure compliance with national policies, and may lead to adjustments in trade dynamics between India and Bangladesh.
