India Plans Satellite Constellation to Monitor Space-Based Surveillance: Report

  • The Ministry of Defence in India is finalizing a contract for a satellite constellation to monitor space-based surveillance targeting the country.
  • The constellation project, valued at Rs 150 crore annually, is expected to be completed by 2026 and will enhance India’s space situational awareness.
  • The satellites will be capable of inter-communication and data transmission to multiple ground stations within India, all infrastructures to be developed domestically.
  • The initiative aims to detect and track potential surveillance by foreign satellites, separate from the current space debris monitoring system.
  • A Bengaluru-based startup, Digantara, has been awarded the contract for the project, with control operations also set to be based in Bengaluru.
  • The project aligns with the Indian government's push for collaboration between government departments and private space companies, boosting confidence in domestic space capabilities.
  • Chaitanya Giri from the Observer Research Foundation views the project positively but highlights that its impact will only be evident once operational.
