India has formally notified the World Trade Organization of its plan to impose retaliatory tariffs on US products in response to Washington's continued duties on steel and aluminium imports.
The proposed move aims to recover an estimated $1.9 billion in duties on a range of US-origin products, citing the impact of American Section 232 tariffs on Indian exports.
India has invoked WTO provisions, stating that the US duties violate global trade norms and have significantly harmed Indian exporters.
This is not the first time India has considered such action; a similar list of retaliatory tariffs was previously proposed but was suspended after bilateral discussions and trade negotiations with the US.
