India revises proposed retaliatory duties against US over steel, aluminium tariffs at WTO

  • India has revised its proposed retaliatory duties against the US at the WTO, reserving the right to impose tariffs that could amount to $3.82 billion, up from the earlier $1.91 billion.
  • New Delhi argues that US tariffs on steel and aluminium under the guise of national security are safeguard measures violating WTO rules, affecting $7.6 billion worth of India's exports to the US.
  • In response to increased US tariffs from 25% to 50%, India has mentioned adjusting products and tariff rates at the WTO. India had previously imposed retaliatory tariffs on US items in 2019, which were partially rolled back in 2023.
  • While India has proposed retaliation, it is currently focusing on bilateral trade negotiations with the US and is hopeful of resolving tariff issues through talks. The decision on imposing the revised retaliatory duties is pending.
