Indian AI Models That Made History in 2024
- India is seeing some significant developments in AI with the government supporting initiatives for homegrown AI startups. The unique feature of these AI models in 2024 is the incorporation of cultural relevance and practical applications with local languages, thus empowering Indian businesses. The government recently unveiled BharatGen, which features LLMs for Indic e-commerce and is designed for product images; it is government-funded. NVIDIA's Nemotron-Hindi model has 4 billion parameters and was designed to create AI solutions for regional demands. It can deploy on Nvidia GPU-accelerated systems, optimising performance for various applications.
- Krutrim, developed by Bhavish Aggarwal's Ola Krutrim, is a model that helps to understand and generate text for 22 Indian languages and 10 specific dialects, including Hindi and Marathi. Sarvam AI launched Sarvam-1, an Indian-language optimised model, supports ten major Indian languages and, with 2 billion parameters, offers faster speed. The Surya OCR toolkit, launched by Vik Paruchuri, is a dependable optical character recognition handling various document types and languages, outperforming Google Cloud OCR. Chitralekha is an open-source video transcreation platform that allows users to auto-generate and edit audio transcripts in Indic languages.
- Airavata, introduced by AI4Bharat, is an instruction-tuned LLM for Hindi. At release, it delivered an improved performance on various tasks which include assisting people in learning Hindi. Sutra, created by Two AI founders, Pranav Mistry, and his team, has dual-transformer architecture. It is powering multilingual cost-efficient AI solutions, including South Asian languages like Marathi and Tamil. Devika, an alternative to Cognition Labs' Devin AI, is an open-source AI software engineer developed by Mufeed VH, a 21-year-old developer from Kerala, who utilises advanced AI models such as Claude 3 and GPT-4.
