India’s antitrust authority, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), has imposed significant penalties on Meta, restricting its use of data collected from WhatsApp for advertising purposes.
The controversy stems from a 2021 update to WhatsApp’s privacy policy, which allowed the app to share user data with other Meta platforms.
The CCI found that Meta holds a dominant position in two major markets in India: messaging services and online display advertising.
As part of the ruling, the CCI has imposed several key measures aimed at curbing Meta’s practices and protecting users.
