Intel Arc B580 review: The new king of $250 GPUs (for now)

  • Intel's new $250 Arc B580 video card performs better than AMD's low-end Radeon 7600, and it can even tangle a bit with NVIDIA when it comes to budget ray tracing. The B580 features 20 Xe cores, 20 ray tracing units and a faster clock speed than the previous Arc cards, with 12GB of VRAM and a 192-bit memory interface.
  • The Arc B580 is compelling for budget games and can produce enough room to pump out 1440p gameplay. In comparison, NVIDIA's RTX 4060 still comes with 8GB of VRAM, whereas AMD's Radeon RX 7600 is burdened with 8GB of RAM and weaker ray tracing performance than NVIDIA and Intel's cards.
  • The B580 shines even brighter with ray tracing, featuring better performance and compatibility. It tackles 1440p gaming well and is well suited for budget game building and PC gaming.
  • While Intel has a clear hardware advantage, timing is of concern. The Arc B580 was launched just as NVIDIA and AMD are expected to show off new desktop GPUs. But for such a cheap video card, the risk of investing in an Intel video card may be worth it.
  • NVIDIA's RTX GPUs can work with its specialized apps like NVIDIA Broadcaster and DLSS 3 upscaling, whereas Intel's XeSS just cracked 200. While we're used to budget cards being mainly limited to 1080p gaming, the Arc B580's additional memory clearly makes it well-suited for 1440p.
  • Intel's video card reference model has no hardware or driver issues, feels premium and sturdy, and stayed relatively cool under load.
  • The Arc B580 performs slightly higher than NVIDIA's RTX 4060 Ti and was noticeably faster than the Radeon 7600 in 3DMark's Timespy Extreme Benchmark. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, it even outperformed the $700 PlayStation 5 Pro. Halo Infinite played in 1440p maxed-out graphics, showing a better performance than the 4060 Ti.
  • Intel's current success in keeping the Arc B580 in stock is a promising start to its new second-generation Arc Xe2 GPUs. But the chip giant's rocky corporate outlook and the upcoming new releases from NVIDIA and AMD are factors to consider before investing in an Intel video card.
  • The Arc B580 is a budget GPU worth investing in at the moment but leaves questions on whether Intel can maintain its decent performance once newer video cards come out.
