Pat Gelsinger has retired as Intel’s CEO after a four-decade career. His departure follows a board meeting where Intel’s performance and strategy were scrutinized, leading to Gelsinger being presented with two choices: resign or be removed.
He opted to step down. Gelsinger, who joined Intel in 1979, became the company’s first Chief Technology Officer and played a key role in innovations like USB and WiFi. After a stint away, he returned as CEO in 2021 to guide Intel through a transformative period.
Intel now faces challenges, including funding cuts, workforce reductions, and competition. Interim co-CEOs David Zinsner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus will lead while a new CEO is sought.
