Microsoft introduces Microsoft Edge Game Assist (Preview), which is the first in-game browser designed for PC gaming and is available setup via Game Bar (Win+G). Gamers use browsers while gaming to get help, track their progress, listen to music, or chat with friends, taking away from the gaming experience, which this new in-game browser aims to solve. It shares the same browser data with Edge on your PC so that the information is always accessible while you play, including your favorites, history, cookies, form fills and more.
Game Assist is designed to take up as little screen real estate as possible, allowing users to quickly glance at the guide and then continue their game. The game is always visible in the background for peace of mind, and it even suggests tips and guides for the game you're playing. It has been optimized to display a unique set of gaming tabs and sidebar apps for a gaming-centric experience and the best performance while displaying resources for gaming whenever you open a new tab
Users can pin the Game Assist browser above their game so they can reference a guide or watch a video while they play, and it also lets them reorder, remove, or add new apps to the sidebar for an easier experience. They can even adjust the transparency in the Game Bar settings under Personalization to display the widget above the game. Game Assist widget work above any game, and you can use it alongside other overlays.
Game Assist shares data with the full Edge browser on your PC. This means that if you have multiple channels of Edge set as your default browser, it will prefer that channel instead. It also means that you will have access to the same data and features as Edge, such as accessing history, form fills, bookmarks and more while gaming.
Game Assist is optimized for mouse and keyboard, and support for Compact Mode in Game Bar, handhelds and gamepad input will be added in the future. As a public preview, it is being released while Microsoft gauges user feedback to enhance and improve the experience.
The Game Assist widget is automatically closed after a period of inactivity but open tabs are restored when Game Assist is re-opened. Some keyboard shortcuts aren't yet supported. It supports Windows 11 24H2, 23H2, 22H2, and all Windows Insider channels. Microsoft seeks to know user thoughts and feedback at the improvement stage and encourages users to set Edge Beta as their default browser.
