Users in Europe can now use PayPal's tap-to-pay feature on iPhones thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) opening up new avenues in Apple's ecosystem.
Apple allowed access to the NFC chip on iPhones for third-party developers in response to anti-competitive concerns, leading to the introduction of NFC support for PayPal in Europe.
The tap-to-pay feature with PayPal currently works with Mastercard in Europe and is undergoing a soft rollout, offering convenience for users to make payments via iPhone at Mastercard-enabled terminals.
PayPal is also planning cashback offers to promote the feature, following other payment services like Vipps that introduced tap-to-pay for iPhones in Europe.
