BYD is set to enter the Japanese market with a new electric kei car, as seen in spyshots resembling Japan's smallest cars with blue camouflage that marks it out to be a BYD model.
This move follows a report by Nikkei Asia stating BYD's intention to tap into the kei car segment, which offers tax incentives and hasn't seen foreign carmakers designing cars specifically for the category.
The new BYD kei car is expected to surpass existing kei EVs in range, potentially reaching about 300 km, thanks to its EV-centric design with a large Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
With a targeted starting price of around 2.5 million yen (RM73,400), this upcoming BYD model could pose a threat to existing Japanese kei EVs due to its anticipated range and performance advantages.
