Is BYD making a kei EV for the Japanese market?

  • BYD is set to enter the Japanese market with a new electric kei car, as seen in spyshots resembling Japan's smallest cars with blue camouflage that marks it out to be a BYD model.
  • This move follows a report by Nikkei Asia stating BYD's intention to tap into the kei car segment, which offers tax incentives and hasn't seen foreign carmakers designing cars specifically for the category.
  • The new BYD kei car is expected to surpass existing kei EVs in range, potentially reaching about 300 km, thanks to its EV-centric design with a large Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
  • With a targeted starting price of around 2.5 million yen (RM73,400), this upcoming BYD model could pose a threat to existing Japanese kei EVs due to its anticipated range and performance advantages.
