I’ve been reviewing PCs and laptops for almost 20 years – which is why I’m more excited about a potential M4 Mac mini than any new MacBook

  • Apple is expected to release new Mac devices including MacBooks and an iMac 2024, all powered by the M4 chip. However, rumors suggest that the most exciting among the potential launches will be an M4-powered Mac mini.
  • The new MacBooks and iMacs are said to be iterative updates with the biggest change being the inclusion of the M4 chip, which may not offer a big enough performance boost compared to previous generations.
  • An M4 Mac mini, on the other hand, has the potential to be the most exciting launch, with an M2 Mac mini version already considered one of the best devices Apple has ever made.
  • The Mac mini has no known Windows 11 competitors and offers the option for a powerful yet almost silent small form factor PC.
  • The idea of hiding a Mac mini behind a monitor or TV, coupled with gaming improvements on the M4 chip, made the potential release an exciting proposition.
  • The current Mac mini starts at $599/€649/AU$999, making it the cheapest way to enter the Mac ecosystem, and the proposed new Mac mini model, if it retains a similar price point, could offer the same level of performance as its more expensive counterparts.
  • The lower entry price also means upgrading to a new Mac mini in the future would be less intimidating compared to the high prices of the MacBook and iMac, allowing more people to experience the Mac ecosystem.
  • Overall, the potential release of an M4-powered Mac mini could be the closest thing to an Apple console and one of the most exciting products Apple could release this year.
