Japan has achieved a new world record for internet speed, reaching 1.02 petabits per second (Pbps), which is 16 million times faster than India's average speed.
This speed can download thousands of HD movies in seconds, making it 3.5 million times faster than the average internet speed in the United States.
The achievement was made by the Photonic Network Laboratory team at Japan's NICT using fibre optic cables with 19 cores over a distance of 1,800 kilometres.
While not yet practical for consumer devices, this breakthrough signifies potential advancements in ultra-fast internet infrastructure for various applications like cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
