Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s government is considering increasing imports of US rice and soybeans as a potential bargaining chip in talks over President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Japan faced criticism from Washington for its export restrictions and distribution system for rice, which were deemed excessively strict and lacking in transparency.
The US also urged Japan to increase imports of other agricultural products, including meat, seafood, and potatoes.
Preparations are underway for a second round of negotiations between Japan and the US, seeking an exemption from the tariffs.
