The owner of the UK’s only operating gigafactory, Japan’s AESC, secures £1bn in funding for a new electric car battery plant in Sunderland to serve Nissan’s car factory.
The funding includes £680m from state bodies and £320m in debt funding. The plant is expected to employ over 1,000 people and support British industries’ growth.
The first phase of building the gigafactory is expected to have a capacity of 15.8GWh, supplying batteries for about 300,000 electric cars, with a second phase in the feasibility study stage.
The UK and US recently agreed on a trade deal reducing tariffs on British car imports, with the US cutting tariffs on up to 100,000 British cars to 10%, benefitting the UK's car industry.
