Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, has launched Redwood Energy to repurpose used electric vehicle batteries into large-scale energy storage systems.
Redwood Energy aims to extract value from discarded EV battery packs that retain over 50% capacity, repurposing them for stationary storage applications before recycling.
The business has deployed a 12 MW, 63 MWh microgrid powered by second-life EV batteries, offering lower-cost energy storage solutions compared to conventional methods.
Redwood Energy plans to scale up its efforts, with over 1 GWh of reusable batteries in the deployment pipeline, expected to grow to 5 GWh in the next year, to meet the increasing demands of AI-driven grids.
