JPJ stops foreign driving licence conversion

  • Effective May 19, JPJ will stop allowing conversion of foreign driving licences to Malaysian licences to enhance compliance with road safety standards involving foreign nationals.
  • Foreigners seeking Malaysian licences will need to follow the same procedures as Malaysian citizens, with exceptions for Diplomatic Corps members, MM2H participants, and certain foreign nationals residing in Malaysia for less than 12 months.
  • Drivers from countries under the Geneva and Vienna Conventions can continue driving in Malaysia using an International Driving Permit from their home country.
  • Asean nationals can use their domestic driving licences in Malaysia based on the 1985 Agreement on the Recognition of Domestic Driving Licences Issued by Asean Countries, aiming to address road accidents involving foreign drivers.
