A federal court has blocked a rule strengthening legal protections for temporary farmworkers from going into effect nationwide.
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi sided with farm groups, ruling that the Department of Labor exceeded its authority when crafting the rule.
The rule aimed to extend safety and organizing protections to H-2A visa holders, including safeguards against workplace abuse and the ability to decline employer-sponsored meetings discouraging organizing.
The decision to block the rule comes after previous court orders overturned it in certain states, and the judge cited the additional burden it would bring to farm operations and state governments.
