The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a federal judge exceeded his authority by ordering Southwest Airlines' in-house attorneys to undergo religious liberty training.
The judge's contempt order against Southwest Airlines was vacated as it was deemed not the least-restrictive means of remedying the airline's non-compliance with the judgment.
The court also reversed part of the jury's finding that Southwest violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and affirmed dismissal of some claims under the Railway Labor Act.
The case involved a former flight attendant who was fired for violating Southwest's harassment policies, and highlighted the nuances of civil contempt sanctions in religious discrimination cases.
