Jump Start for Volkswagen’s Battery Startup PowerCo
- Volkswagen is forging ahead with the transition to electric vehicles and founded battery company PowerCo in 2022.
- Andreas Eckle, CIO of PowerCo, said production standards will be the same at all locations.
- The blueprint factory in Salzgitter, Germany, will serve as the model for gigafactories in Valencia, Spain and St. Thomas, Canada.
- The factories shall create battery cells to a total volume of up to 200 GWh.
- PowerCo has to make sure the complete supply chain is committed to sustainability.
- PowerCo was started two years ago and 1,500 people were recruited to set up an IT landscape and develop various areas of the company.
- Implementing an SAP S/4HANA Cloud system and realizing three go-lives helped the company establish standard processes.
- PowerCo CIO Andreas Eckle said the SAP EC-powered cloud service helped significantly to support recruiting, onboarding and workforce management.
- The final version of logistics management was delivered in June, 2023, and other systems processes are planned for integration soon.
- The current cloud ERP system serves as a foundation while also supporting future business models like recycling of battery cells and energy storage systems.
