SkyWest Airlines has been ordered by a Texas jury to pay $2 million in punitive damages and $170,000 for emotional harm to a female employee who alleged sexual discrimination, retaliation, and a hostile work environment.
The verdict is the largest jury trial award ever obtained by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in the Northern District of Texas, although it was reduced to $300,000 due to statutory caps on damages.
The employee filed a complaint stating that she faced various forms of sexual harassment including comments, jokes, and gestures. After reporting the issue to her supervisor, she faced warnings and was placed on administrative leave.
The jury found SkyWest Airlines guilty of maintaining a hostile work environment but did not agree with the allegations of retaliation made by the EEOC.
