A consortium led by Grimshaw, Haptic, and Athens-based K-Studio has unveiled the design for the expansion of Athens International Airport, aiming to increase the capacity from 26 to 40 million passengers by 2032.
The project intends to transform the airport into a functional travel hub that reflects Athens' layered identity, incorporating both expansion and renovation while retaining and enriching the existing features.
The design embraces natural materials and maximizes daylight, embodying Athens' history, material culture, and pace of life, resulting in an airport that feels local yet adheres to global standards. Sustainability is a key focus, with passive design strategies and low-carbon materials integrated into the architecture.
The expansion includes a new western facade with stone fins and sculptural portals, as well as two immersive 'oculus' spaces that provide light, gardens, and a grand gathering space for passengers.
