Kakinada SEZ plans to invest ₹1,310 crore to establish a desalination plant in Andhra Pradesh, with approval from an Expert Appraisal Committee.
The desalination plant will have seawater intake pipelines drawing 380 MLD, distributing product water to industries and port through pipelines, and an outfall pipeline for brine rejects into the sea.
Conditions for Coastal Regulation Zone clearance include developing a prototype for brine discharge reuse, funding for research, and earmarking ₹10 crore for environmental measures.
The project aims to reduce freshwater load in neighboring areas by using desalination water and minimizing groundwater extraction, with any project scope changes requiring fresh appraisal.
