United Launch Alliance prepares to launch the first production satellites for Amazon's Project Kuiper satellite internet constellation using an Atlas 5 551 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
The liftoff is scheduled for Monday, April 28, with live coverage provided by Spaceflight Now starting two hours before the launch window opens at 7 p.m. EDT.
Weather forecasts indicate a 75 percent chance of favorable conditions for the launch, with concerns about Cumulus Cloud, Anvil Cloud, and Surface Electric Fields rules.
The Atlas 5 rocket will fly in a north-easterly trajectory after liftoff and is equipped with five solid rocket boosters from Northrop Grumman.
Amazon has eight remaining Atlas 5 rockets for launching Kuiper satellites, with plans for potential additional missions before transitioning to Vulcan rockets for national security missions.
Project Kuiper aims to deploy over 3,200 satellites in low Earth orbit to provide internet services with low latency for commercial and government customers.
Amazon's Kuiper 1 mission will carry the first full production satellites, following the launch of two prototype satellites in October 2023 for testing purposes.
Once operational with 578 satellites, Amazon will commence customer service as mandated by the FCC regulations.
In addition to Atlas and Vulcan rockets, Amazon has purchased launches on Ariane 6, New Glenn, and Falcon 9 rockets to support the Project Kuiper constellation.
Amazon also established Kuiper Government Solutions (KGS) to cater to specialized government needs, partnering with L3Harris Technologies to offer enhanced communication services.
