Lotus flowers have reappeared in Wular Lake after 33 years, covering 4 to 5 square kilometers, following a major flood in 1992 that buried the lotus plants under silt.
Wular Lake, Asia’s second-largest freshwater lake, underwent desiltation from 2020 to 2023 to restore its ecological balance and biodiversity.
The revival efforts led to the return of lotus flowers in 2024, with authorities also planting seeds to aid the process and restoring water levels in the lake.
The resurgence of lotus in Wular Lake not only rejuvenates its ecology but also rejuvenates economic prospects for communities that relied on the lake for livelihood, including through harvesting nadru, fishing, and collecting water chestnuts.
