Mazda Australia plans to offer more plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs to meet emissions targets under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) that came into effect on January 1, 2025.
Currently, Mazda's CX-60 and CX-80 SUVs in Australia are equipped with PHEV powertrains, but the CX-70 and CX-90 do not have PHEV versions available yet.
The NVES legislation aims to incentivize manufacturers to reduce carbon dioxide emissions across their vehicle lineups, with penalties for exceeding limits.
Mazda Australia is considering introducing PHEV versions of the CX-70 and CX-90 to avoid penalties and is also working on bringing the 6e electric liftback to the Australian market.
