Mecanoo’s Doris Duke Theater has officially opened at Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts, replacing the original studio theater destroyed by fire in 2020 with a flexible, high-tech space for both live and digitally augmented performances.
The project combines a mass timber structure with advanced technical infrastructure, accommodating up to 400 audience members and supporting various performance staging formats.
Designed in collaboration with Marvel and theater consultants Charcoalblue, the theater grounds itself in the Berkshire landscape with thermally treated pine cladding, rainwater collection systems, and a deep veranda that adds to its character.
Surrounding landscape interventions by Marvel, in partnership with Indigenous artists, enhance the engagement with the site, offering new spaces for reflection and interaction for visitors.
