Mercedes-Benz has reportedly stopped work on a range extended version of the EQS sedan with a petrol engine. The automaker concluded that the range extender setup had a relatively short-term benefit in terms of sales and high production costs.Range extender technology was considered due to the popularity of plug-in hybrid cars in parts of China with limited EV charging infrastructure. The EQS prototypes had a 1.0-litre two-cylinder petrol engine to recharge the batteries of the 200kW electric motor-driven rear-wheel drive sedan.
