Meta has announced the purchase of the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois to keep a nuclear power plant operating until 2047.
The deal involves Meta buying the 'clean energy attributes' of the 1.1 gigawatt nuclear power plant, contributing to carbon accounting efforts to lower the company's climate impact.
The multibillion-dollar deal will help Constellation relicense the plant and secure a customer for the duration of the license extension, as Big Tech companies, including Meta, show increasing interest in nuclear power.
The deal with Meta will help prevent the closure of the Clinton power plant, which faced shutdown threats previously but is now looking to extend its operating license through 2047.
