Meta Platforms Inc, owner of Facebook, has been fined $1.3 billion by EU privacy regulators for transferring user data to the United States.
The Irish Data Protection Commission found that Meta's data transfers did not adequately address the risks to users' fundamental rights and freedoms.
Meta has been given five months to suspend future data transfers to the US and six months to stop unlawful processing and storage of transferred EU data in the US.
Despite the fine, the impact is expected to be mitigated by a transition phase and the possibility of a new EU-US data flows agreement in the near future.
