Meta fined $1.3 billion by EU for sending user data to US: Report

  • Meta Platforms Inc, owner of Facebook, has been fined $1.3 billion by EU privacy regulators for transferring user data to the United States.
  • The Irish Data Protection Commission found that Meta's data transfers did not adequately address the risks to users' fundamental rights and freedoms.
  • Meta has been given five months to suspend future data transfers to the US and six months to stop unlawful processing and storage of transferred EU data in the US.
  • Despite the fine, the impact is expected to be mitigated by a transition phase and the possibility of a new EU-US data flows agreement in the near future.
