Facebook's parent company, Meta, is planning to lay over 40,000km of fiber optic cables under the sea to handle data for its social media platforms and AI investments.
The project, which may cost over $10 billion, will make Meta the sole owner and user of the underwater cable.
Meta already has the 2Africa cable project, aiming to connect Africa and Europe, but the new cable would be its own project.
The cable's route is expected to serve India and will avoid potential geopolitical risk areas in the Red Sea, South China Sea, and Egypt.
