Meta, the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, received 1,043 reports of fake identities from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in 2024.
The PTA also received 37 reports of compromised social media accounts, with 27 Facebook accounts and 10 WhatsApp accounts forwarded to Meta for recovery.
The primary causes of these incidents include data breaches, social engineering schemes, using unsecured public Wi-Fi, malware, insecure passwords, and lack of two-factor authentication (2FA).
The PTA recommends stronger passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, avoiding sensitive activity on public Wi-Fi, logging out of shared devices, and limiting rights offered to other parties for better account security.
