Meta has struck a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy to keep a nuclear reactor in Illinois operating. This marks Meta's first agreement with a nuclear power plant as other tech giants like Google and Microsoft are also securing nuclear power for their AI and datacenters.
Constellation Energy's Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois, which is subsidized by the state, will receive support from Meta's power purchase agreement post the expiration of the zero-emissions credit program in 2027.
The agreement allows Constellation to expand the Clinton plant's capacity by 30MW, benefiting approximately 800,000 US homes. Other tech companies may follow this model to support existing nuclear facilities while exploring new energy sources for their datacenters.
Meta's Head of Global Energy, Urvi Parekh, highlighted the importance of providing certainty for the continuous operation of power plants, while Constellation's CEO, Joe Dominguez, expressed interest in similar agreements with other clients across the country.
