Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been focusing on artificial intelligence, recently investing in Scale AI and hiring its founder Alexandr Wang.
Meta reportedly tried to acquire Safe Superintelligence, an AI startup led by OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, but he declined the offer.
Instead of acquiring Safe Superintelligence, Meta hired its CEO, Daniel Gross, along with Nat Friedman, former GitHub CEO and Gross's business partner at NFDG.
Gross and Friedman will work under Wang at Meta, and the tech giant will also acquire a stake in NFDG.
Meta will provide more details on its superintelligence efforts and the new team members in the coming weeks.
Meta's strategy is part of the ongoing AI talent war among tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that Meta offered large signing bonuses to attract talent but hasn't succeeded in luring top employees from OpenAI.
Meta's hiring activities are not unique, as OpenAI itself acquired iPhone designer Jony Ive and Google and Microsoft have also made significant AI-related hires and acquisitions.
Amazon is also leveraging AI to enhance efficiency, with CEO Andy Jassy mentioning potential job cuts due to the technology's impact.
