Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, has won a copyright lawsuit brought by authors including Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, who claimed their books were used without permission to train the company's AI system.
US district judge Vince Chhabria ruled that the authors did not provide enough evidence to prove that Meta's AI training would harm their market, citing insufficient argument under US copyright law.
Chhabria acknowledged that using copyrighted material without permission for AI training can be illegal in many cases, contrasting with a separate ruling that found fair use in a similar AI copyright case.
The judge expressed concerns about AI models flooding the market with content created from copyrighted works, potentially undermining the incentive for human creativity.
