Microsoft is closing its operations in Pakistan after 25 years in the country, shifting to a new operational model of serving customers through resellers and other offices.
The decision will affect five Microsoft employees; the company had no engineering resources in Pakistan and employees focused on selling Azure and Office products.
The closure is part of Microsoft's broader workforce restructuring, reducing global roles by 4%. Pakistan's Information and Broadcasting Ministry views it as part of a wider workforce-optimization program.
The exit comes amidst Pakistan's efforts to provide IT certifications from tech giants to its youth. Unlike Google, Microsoft's departure highlights challenges in Pakistan's tech sector, where local companies and Chinese firms dominate.
