Microsoft has announced the shutdown of Skype, ending its two-decade run as a pioneering internet communications app.
Skype was founded in 2003, allowing users to make free audio and video calls over the internet. It had hundreds of millions of users at its peak.
Acquired by Microsoft in 2011, Skype struggled to integrate with other Microsoft tools and faced competition from Apple's FaceTime and Google's communication apps.
Existing Skype users will be transitioned to Microsoft Teams, and no job cuts are expected as a result of Skype's closure.
