Microsoft will take an $800 million charge on its investment in the Cruise robotaxi business after General Motors announced its exit from the initiative.
The charge will result in a 9 cent reduction in Microsoft's earnings per share for the quarter ending Dec. 31.
GM will combine Cruise and its internal teams to develop autonomous and assisted driving technologies.
GM cited the need for considerable time and resources to scale the robotaxi business, and the increasing competition in the market, as reasons for its decision.
