Microsoft announced the release of their Copilot tool for consumers, the first major release from its consumer AI organization, under Mustafa Suleyman.
The refresh has received mixed reactions, with some employees and user groups critizing the product's release.
Commentators have described the new focus as a backward step.
Previous reviews of Copilot were largely positive, however since the release, reviews have taken a negative turn, garnering over 250 one-star reviews
The Copilot app has been criticised for becoming dumbed down, being less functional and lacking the conversation element in previous versions.
The update represents "a companion experience that is more conversational, where it’s there to support you, guide you and help you solve less defined problems", according to Divya Kumar, the General Manager of Copilot and AI Marketing.
Some Microsoft employees questioned why the company released an amazing app only to update it with a dumbed-down version.
Users say the refresh of the Copilot app has frozen, or is slow to respond, and seemed "dumber" in its results, generating fewer outputs.
Additionally, there is concern that the previous level of detailed information has gone missing, including real-time sports scores and local recommendations.
Supporters of the app say the new user interface is a positive, designed for general consumer use
